| Abstract: | Sub-Saharan Africa's cinema truly emerged in the early 1960s. Although a number of films have been shown with success, their distribution both throughout the continent and abroad is still limited. They have therefore, to date, generated only scarce in-depth and comprehensive publications. To explore this realm further, the book highlights a select group of representative cinéastes whose works have both significantly enriched African filmmaking and received substantial international exposure: 8 from Senegal, 4 from Ivory Coast, 2 from Cameroon, 2 from Niger, and 1 each from Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guadeloupe, Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria, and South Africa. |
