Abstract:The purpose of the Survey of African Community Languages and their Use in Education was to identify those languages which as well as mother tongues are also dominant means of communication within particular areas of each member State of UNESCO's Africa region, and to provide information concerning research and other action being taken towards the development of these languages and their use in education. The languages are listed alphabetically with maps and data sheets; country data sheets are also provided. The appendix contains an alphabetical list of African community languages, a list of periodicals using African languages, and a list of principal institutions involved in or responsible for African languages research.
