Abstract:In the morning of 17 February 1917 the 'Mendi', a troopship carrying black South Africans, was rammed and sunk in the English Channel. Over 600 men lost their lives. This book is the first historical account of the tragedy. The book also presents a picture of the South African Native Labour Contingent, recruited in 1916 and 1917 to support the Allied armies in France, and for which more than 20,000 men volunteered.
