| Abstract: | This dissertation is concerned with the impact of the implementation of a particular kind of agricultural development project, viz. Betterment Planning, upon the rural black village of Chatha in the Keiskammahoek Magisterial District of the Ciskei, South Africa. The project was implemented in the 1960s and involved the reorganization of the village environment into demarcated arable, grazing and residential areas. The dissertation traces in particular the socioeconomic consequences of the residential relocation that it involved. It shows that most households in Chatha are agriculturally worse off and have less land than before the implementation of the project. It argues, however, that this development is offset by the dramatic rise in the value of cash incomes. The study also examines the impact of the project on political competition and on patterns of ritual association. |
