|Abstract:||The idea for this book grew out of the discussions among the participants in a workshop entitled 'Drought in Kenya: lessons from 1984', held in Gigiri, Kenya, in May 1986. The purpose of the book is to collect the lessons learned in the 1984/1985 drought. The book comprises five parts. The introduction (Part 1) provides an overview of the 1984 drought and national responses in Kenya. The first chapter identifies major themes discussed throughout the text, while chapter 2 reviews in detail the national response to the drought. The majority of the book assesses drought forecasting and monitoring (Part 2), documents famine vulnerability and household coping strategies (Part 3), and extracts lessons from institutional drought management (Part 4). The final part (5) discusses drought and food policy in Kenya and Africa.|
