| Abstract: | For each of the identified 168 US and 12 Canadian companies with direct investment in South Africa and/or Namibia, the Directory provides a profile of the extent of its direct investment in South Africa: name, location and product line of its operations; value of assets and sales there, where available; and number of employees, broken down by race. For each US company the Directory shows whether it is a signatory to the Sullivan principles (now called The Statement of Principles for South Africa). A third section describes the ties of 109 companies that do not have direct investment or employees in South Africa, but have contracts, or licensing, distribution, franchising, trademark or technological agreements with companies in South Africa. The 16 appendices include lists of companies according to key variables: number of employees, state of parent company, industry sector in South Africa, size of investment in South Africa, and Sullivan signatories. Others list companies that have dormant South African subsidiaries; companies that have severed all ties to South Africa (54); and US and Canadian companies with direct investment in South Africa that are owned by foreign parents. An index provides names of the South African subsidiaries and affiliates of US and Canadian companies. |
