Abstract: | Nigeria is at present being confronted with an acute food crisis, the depth of which has been recognized by various regimes. A review of public policies on food production in Nigeria reveals that up to independence in 1960, there was no government policy on food production in the country. Subsequent policy statements and guidelines, including 'Operation Feed the Nation', launched in 1976 and aimed at mobilizing the nation towards food self-sufficiency, and the Green Revolution Programme, launched in 1980, have not led to increased food production, and Nigeria has continued to depend on food imports. The author concludes with policy recommendations for achieving food self-sufficiency in Nigeria, amongst others: the promotion of domestic crash food programmes, a selective food importation strategy, the improvement of food storage and processing facilities, and a better research focus on food production.
