Abstract:Farming and ranching crocodiles has of late attracted much entrepreneurial attention in Africa especially in the SADCC region of Southern Africa where crocodiles still occur in abundance. There are two main reasons for this sudden interest: 1) crocodile farming and ranching is rewarding in both economic and commercial terms; and 2) the economic value of crocodiles provides a good argument in support of sustainable conservation of the crocodile. In his opening comments, the author, who is from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks of Botswana, outlines, amongst others, criteria for crocodile management plans and their implementation. The bibliography which follows is arranged alphabetically by author and contains four references for the period 1930-1949, 34 from 1950-1969, and 73 from 1970-1988. Ref.
