Abstract: | The multiple and diverse roles of the teacher in education for rural development have profound implications for teacher education programmes. These must reflect the integrative activities the teachers will be expected to carry out; that is, in addition to academic and professional education, they should have a strong scholastic and intellectual relationship to the culture and heritage of rural communities, incorporate adult education principles, and provide practical experience appropriate for community development in the rural areas of Africa. The studies that follow this introduction address this issue. J. Tlou, Gaontatlhe Mautle and H. Dyasi relate it to the case of Botswana (p. 83-93), D.E.B. Chaytor to the Bunumbu project in Sierra Leone (p. 95-109), M.A. Brown Sherman to women (p. 111-120) and C. Chikombah to Zimbabwe (p. 121-129). Bibliogr. |
