Abstract:Introduction to a special issue of 'Vierteljahresberichte' on Nigeria's structural adjustment programme and its consequences. It provides an overview of the socioeconomic heritage of the oil boom of the 1970s, discusses the economic crisis of the period 1981-1986 and the national debate on the IMF solution, and outlines the structure and scope of the structural adjustment programme (SAP), which was launched in July, 1986. Some of the major implications of the SAP are discussed, viz. the redistributive effects on income distribution; the diversification of exports and the increase in income from the non-oil sector; liberalization and privatization.
