Abstract: | Report of a study carried out in 1982-1983 in order to test the assessment of two groups of Nigerians (representative of the 'old' and the 'new' generation respectively) of certain expressions that were widely used in the mass media during the Second Republic (1979-1983). The study aimed at determining the respondents' assessments of the 'Nigerianness' of various English expressions. It was found that the two groups did not differ significantly in their assessment of non-British English expressions. Due to a lack of information on the origin of most of the expressions, respondents took them to be 'Nigerian'. The author concludes that Nigerians should be made aware of the Americanisms which the Second Republic has injected into their vocabulary. Bibliogr., notes. |
