Abstract: | An examination of the available literature on the economic effects of industrial property laws and a consideration of the political economy of the southern African region may provide hypothetical answers to such questions as the role of industrial property laws in lessening the SADCC countries' dependence on South Africa, the role of common, or at least a coordinated set of, industrial property laws in jointly overcoming underdevelopment, and the differential impact of the different industrial property laws of the nine SADCC member countries on the development process. It was found that the actual effect of industrial property laws on the economic process depends on the magnitude of a number of factors about which little information is available at present. The acquisition of data may help the SADCC countries design and/or coordinate laws which more effectively assist the economic development process without excessively draining their foreign exchange reserves from license or royalty fees, as well as helping the region apply the leverage it has as a vital outlet for South African trade more effectively in its dealings with South Africa.
