Abstract: | Is a German foreign policy vis-à-vis South Africa conceivable that visibly improves the chances and/or speeds up the process of the abolition of apartheid and is relatively free of undesirable side effects? This paper tries to answer this question, examining the following social sectors/organizations in West Germany that have interests related to South Africa, and accordingly act as foreign policy protagonists: the fundamentalist apartheid opponents; anticommunist supporters of the reformist efforts of the South African government; the business community; trade unions; churches; and political parties (SPD, CDU, CSU, FDP, and the Greens). |
