| Abstract: | In Transkei (South Africa) and elsewhere in less-developed countries, little more than lip service has been paid to the recognition of women as essential contributors to the rural economy and their integration into the development process. This article deals with the role of women in rural Xhosa society, in order to fill in that gap. It reviews 1) personal characteristics (marital status - family size and attitudes towards birth control - age - education); 2) socioeconomic factors (social activities - attitudes towards landholding - migration - labour for farm work - labour for domestic water supplies and fuel - family diet - household expenditure and income); 3) sociopsychological characteristics (decisionmaking - attitudes towards agriculture and towards betterment - 'felt needs' - household, farming and community needs - access to information). Finally, it discusses the implications of these findings for future policy. The survey covers administrative areas in representative mixed-farming regions in the Qumbu and Nqamakwe (Emgcwe) districts, as well as at the Qamata Irrigation Scheme in the St. Mark's district.
