Abstract: | The data for this research is derived from fieldwork in progress among the Logoli people, who are located in the Western Province of Kenya, in an area known as Maragoli. Initial observations are reported on the cultural practice of 'uvukwi', literally translated by the Logoli as dowry. The question is examined as to whether uvukwi has a negative effect upon women's feelings of self-worth, when the ways and means to the way it 'ought' to be, culminating in the good life, are blocked by individual and economic considerations. The argument put forward is illustrated with several examples. Notes. |
