Abstract: | The primary concern of the West African Islamic schalarly community was the preservation and transmission of the Islamic religious tradition, as they understood it, in an unadulterated form. In their teaching, originality with respect to the tradition itself was thus unthinkable. However there was much scope for experimentation and even innovation in the method of transmission and explanation of the tradition. The present paper explores the history and content of one partricular teaching in the field of dogmatic theology - the Kabbe, the Fulfulde equivalent of 'dogma' - which was susceptible to juist much experimentation. |
