Abstract:Recent statistics on the sectoral distribution of the economically active population, on GDP composition, and on export returns, indicate that agricultural production in Zaire has decreased steadily since the 1960s. Official explanations of the agricultural crisis emphasize the degradation of the transportation infrastructure, the inefficiency of agricultural research and the educational system, the lack of financial resources, the absence of an adequate agricultural policy, and the inadequacy of public institutions involved in agricultural development. The main reason, however, is political. Especially relevant in this respect is the role of the State and the compradore bourgeoisie in exploiting peasants through very low agricultural prices.
