Abstract:The Turkana people, Eastern Nilotic speakers, live in a semi-desert in northwestern Kenya. The present research on their vocabulary was carried out between July 1982 and January 1989 around Kakuma, a small town 120 km northwest of Lodwar, the centre of the Turkana District. The vocabulary is classified as follows: human and animal body; illness and injury; clothing and dresses; eating; dwelling and household; kinship; human being; animals; plants; body actions; daily life; social life; mental life; action toward things; things; natural phenomena; ground; time; nature of things; general (actions); general (things); miscellany.
