Abstract:Cape Verde is the only former Portuguese colony in Africa which since its independence has systematically presented positive and sustained rhythms of economic growth. This is the more surprising given its lack of natural resources and the difficulties it faces as a Sahel country. This paper examines the economic development of Cape Verde since 1975, arguing that the country, although inserted in the international economic order, has maintained its autonomy of decision. Two development phases are distinguished: the period from 1975 to 1985, characterized by the internationalization of the economy through external aid and remittances from abroad; and a period of growing internationalization and foreign investment since 1975.
