Abstract: | The confluence of the Niger and the Benue rivers (Nigeria) forms a complex linguistic area. The author describes the genetic classification of the various languages which are found in the area, and proposes a historical hypothesis for their present-day distribution. It would appear that the complexity of the area's linguistic map is, in fact, the reflection of a long list of primary migrations and of a process of assimilation going back to a distant past.
