Abstract: | Evidence from written and archaeological sources suggests that both Cyrenaica (eastern Libya) and Tripolitania (northwest Libya) looked northwards rather than eastwards and westwards in ancient times. So the regular or subsistence regional trade of Cyrenaica was directed towards Crete, southern Greece and the Aegean, while that of Tripolitania was focussed on the westcentral Mediterranean: Tunisia, Sicily, Sardinia and westcentral Italy. These areas of regional trade find support in their definition in the circulation of coinage. Moreover, they are also what one would predict on the basis of prevailing winds and currents in the Mediterranean. Bibliogr. |
