| Abstract: | The present review of archaeological and architectural investigations relating to the Islamic period in Libya conducted in the course of the two decades since 1969 reveals the existence of a marked imbalance both in terms of relatively neglected periods and relatively neglected areas of the country. The discussion deals with the Islamic antiquities by region: Cyrenaica (Barq¯a, modern al-Marj; Ptolemais, modern Tulmaytha; Tocra, modern Tawshira; Berenike, modern Sidi Khrebish, Benghazi; Ajd¯abiyah; Ujlah/Awjlah) - the Gulf of Sirt (Mad¯inah Sul.t¯an, or the early Islamic town of Surt or Sirt) - Tripolitania (Tripoli; Qa.sr al-.Hamm¯am; Ghirza; Jabal Naf¯usa; Zuwaylah).
