Abstract:This book brings together the experience of a number of writers who have worked on, or studied, poverty alleviation programmes in Asia and Africa. It focuses on the administration of famine prevention, examining why famine followed drought in Ethiopia and Sudan in 1984 and 1985 and how famine has been prevented from following drought in recent years in India, Bangladesh and Botswana. Various policy issues are emphasized, including livestock, agricultural technology, the control of assets, and the roles of government, aid agencies and local groups in preventing famine.
