Abstract:This article statistically examines the instabilities in marketed output of maize in Kenya. It uses a model with time and prices as variables. The data used were obtained from the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) for 1966/67 to 1984/85. The proportion of marketed maize fluctuates drastically even for the major maize producing regions in western Kenya. To reduce these variations and enable the government to decontrol marketing, Kenya should stress the use of high-yielding and drought-tolerant maize varieties, ensuring ample maize for rural deficit-zones without competing with urban centres for the maize surplus.
