| Abstract: | Contract farming and outgrower schemes in Zambia were studied to understand their contributions and limitations for increasing agricultural growth and rural welfare. This case study focused on sugarcane and cotton. The relationships between contracting parties, the nature of the contracts and the operation of the contractual arrangements are discussed, including the implications for replicating such arrangements for other crops. Given the incidence of institutional deficiencies in projects under other strategies, the two projects under study (the Kaleya Smallholder Scheme (KSC) and the Lint Company (Lintco)) have performed well. The field work, carried out between 1986 and 1988, covered the Central, Eastern and Southern provinces of Zambia. The authors drew freely upon A. Ellman's 1986 report on the Kaleya Smallholder Sugarcane Scheme. Notes, ref. |
