Abstract: | This paper examines the participation of Nigerian rural women in agricultural production and its implications for national development. The presentation is in four parts. Part one discusses the concept of development and trends in its evaluation. Part two focuses on the participation of women in agriculture. Part three dwells on the neglect of rural women's role in agriculture and factors that have adversely affected rural women's agricultural production. Part four discusses the findings from a preliminary survey on the role of Igbo rural women of eastern Nigeria in agricultural production. The paper concludes with a summary and recommendations for future action, including the need to recognize women's socioeconomic contribution, to decrease the work burden of rural women, to provide women with access to resources, especially credit, to eliminate all forms of discrimination, and to introduce infrastructural facilities in the rural areas.
