Abstract: | In order to illustrate her statement that ignoring the role of women in the economy of a country affects not only women, but even more so the economy, the author discusses constraints on the role of women in the development policy of Tanzania. Disregard for the fact that women are the basic producers of agricultural goods is one of the main internal causes of Tanzania's poor economic performance. Women are being ignored in international and local level policies; in foreign aided and local development projects, both in theory and practice (the focus is on an aid project supported by FINNIDA, the Finnish International Development Agency); and at the local level in the villages. As the most important remedy for improving the situation, the author suggests a realistic analysis of the entire development scene in order to reveal the real share of women in terms of production of both food and cash crops. Furthermore, more women should be employed as development experts, whether within donor agencies or local project implementations. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
