Abstract: | Analysis of the energy situation in developing countries shows that they are involved in a process of energy transition due to population growth, the concentration of people in urban areas, and an extremely rapid industrialization. This process of energy transition is characterized by an increase in the consumption of energy from conventional sources, particularly oil, and a decrease in the consumption of energy from traditional sources, such as fuelwood. Conventional energy sources are used mainly by the modern economic sector in the urban areas, while traditional energy sources are the only energy source for the rural population. The author carried out a study of the energy situation during the period 1980-1984 in eleven countries in the Sahel and East Africa, viz. Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Chad, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Somalia, and the Sudan. The main findings were: a predominance of traditional energy sources, a lack of proper energy policies, a steady increase in the use of conventional energy sources.
