Abstract:	This synthesis of existing research on the role of the family in educational attainment in Kenya is divided into three broad divisions. The first examines the dynamics of the education that occurs within the family and the implications of that training for formal educational achievement, looking at the enculturation that occurs within the family, by whom, and through what processes. The second division examines the more overt role the family plays in educational attainment through both positive involvement (e.g. the provision of financial support, sponsorship) and negative involvement (e.g. active resistance to education). The final section, in conclusion, suggests a research agenda based on this synthesis. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
