Abstract:At the onset of adolescence it may be assumed that the formal school system has not yet made a significant impact on career preference. If biases are subsequently perceived at the end of adolescence or in early adulthood, the formal school system may be suspected to have made a contribution during the intervening period. On these assumptions, the author tested a sample of 1381 Standard Six pupils, drawn from schools in Mombasa, Nairobi and Kisii (Kenya), in order to find out whether the career aspirations of girls at the onset of adolescence show an equal bias in all fields. The results indicated that by the onset of adolescence, girls are already biased against technical careers with a physical science bias. Bibliogr.
