| Abstract: | After a non-technical explanation of the basic principles of classical central place theory the author reviews its application to the understanding and planning of service center systems in various parts of Africa. The dangers of planning without understanding are demonstrated, and so are those of improved knowledge which is not translated into planning action. This review is followed by a case study of the central place system in the Mpika District. There was an acute need for baseline studies in this district so that the drastic changes expected from the imminent Tazara railway construction could be monitored. |
