About person:Abu al-Abbas Ahmad Ibn Idris (ca. 1749-1837)ISNI
Abstract:Ahmad b. Idris, the Moroccan mystic and teacher, is one of the seminal figures of Islam in the 19th century. In most of the standard surveys of modern Islam he is described as a key figure in the neo-Sufi reform or revivalist movement of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Based on new sources from the Sudan and Egypt, the first four chapters detail his life and travels in North Africa, Egypt and Arabia. Then follows an examination of his relations with his students, who included Muhammad al-Sanusi, Muhammad Uthman al-Mirghani, and Ibrahim al-Rashid. The next chapter is devoted to the Idrisi tradition in Egypt, the Sudan, Northeast Africa, the Ottoman Lands, and South Asia. The final chapter gives an account of his teachings.
