Abstract: | Since 1984 the Institute of Social Studies at The Hague and the University of Zimbabwe have had a joint project of multidisciplinary postgraduate education and research in rural and regional planning. This is a revised version of a paper on regional planning education which the author first presented in 1988 within the framework of this project. The study is oriented to Anglophone and Southern and Eastern Africa. It first identifies some of the issues involved in education and training for regional development planning. Then it looks at the development since the 1950s of relations between the environment and organization of regional and subnational planning, on the one hand, and the practice and requirements of education and training, on the other. Finally, it considers the contents of regional planning education and training in more detail. |
