Abstract:Desertification in the Sahel has been caused by a synergism of human and natural factors, i.e. the rapid increase of human and animal populations and the simultaneous occurrence of a long drought phase which began in 1968. In the first two chapters, the author deals with the general aspects of this kind of ecological imbalance, the processes which are triggered off as well as the methods of monitoring desertification in the Sahelian zone. The main part of the book presents the results of a field study on desertification carried out in 1976-1977 and followed up till 1983 in northern Darfur in the Sudan. The study assesses the physical and anthropogenic complex of the processes of desertification in northern Darfur. The ecological and socioeconomical factors are analysed, and the consequences for the ecosystem and for man himself are discussed, as well as feasible measures to combat desertification. The regional differences within the study area are stressed. A survey of the present ecological potential of the region and its use and misuse by man is also presented.
