Abstract: | A selection of 18 papers grouped in two sections: geography, and economic and political history. Those on the geography of the region focus on desertification as a long-term process, on the incidence of droughts, and on traditional and modern adaptation to sudden climatic crises. The papers in the history section are all concerned with movement in one form or another: long distance trade, jihad, hijra, the pilgrimage, pastoral and labour migration. These activities are analysed within a larger framework, such as State formation or power relations between sedentary and nomadic populations. The term Central Bilad al-Sudan covers the Chad Basin, bounded by mountain ranges (Ahaggar, Air, Tibesti, Ennedi, Jebel Marra and the highlands of northern Cameroun and northern Nigeria) and water courses such as the Niger and the rivers of southern Chad. |
