Abstract:Organized labour has always played an important role in the political life of Nigeria. This article examines the role of the Nigerian labour movement in politics during the Second Republic, i.e. the period of civilian rule under American-styled presidential party politics from 1979 to 1983. A brief examination of the historical and environmental context which shaped the role of organized labour during this period, is followed by a description of the launching of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in 1978; the period of transition to the Second Republic, during which the NLC adopted a neutralist stance in politics; internal divisions within the NLC; the Workers' Charter of Demands of 1980, which was presented to the government as a response to the promises made during the election campaign of 1979; the government's reaction the Charter; the general strike of 1981; and industrial relations and actions in both the public and private sectors during the period 1979-1983.
