Abstract: | This paper is concerned with the attitudes of Moroccan youth, 9-17 years of age, to questions related to Arabism and Islam. The main data were gathered in a 1980 survey of elementary and junior high school students in Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakesh. The orientation of these young Moroccans was clearly patriotic, evidencing a strong attachment to their country. Patriotism is also part of a complex of loyalties and identifications, at the centre of which are Islam and Arabism. The Moroccan youths' attachment to the Arab/Muslim world appears to be primarily cultural. Also, their values continue to be to a great extent traditional Arab/Muslim values. Their political world is not so clearly defined. Concerning the determinants of the students' attitudes, it may be stated that, while Islam as a belief system permeates the social ideology of these youths, Arabism as a culture begins to increase in strength in the adolescent years. Apart from age and educational level, sex, social class, and geographic region tend to impact to some extent on attitude formation. Notes, ref. |
