| Abstract: | Islam dominates culture and society in the Sudan except in the southern provinces. It eclipses, to some extent, questions of cultural and ethnic identity. The relation between Islam and music varies from ambivalence to repression, and is always open to interpretation by different parties. The local traditional practice of music is, apart from the mother tongue, one of the most important supports of independent cultural identity. Therefore it is not surprising that in the Sudan each ethnic group has its own characteristic music. The music of the Nubians (Northern Sudan), the Shilluk (Upper Nile Province) and the Berta (Blue Nile Province) serves as example. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
