Abstract:This book resulted from a workshop held at the University of Sussex in July 1987 on 'Farmers and agricultural research: complementary methods'. It presents a new paradigm and methods for agricultural research, making the case for a farmer-first mode to complement the traditional transfer of technology. Each of the four parts of the book concentrates on a main theme: farmer innovation, methods to enable farmers' agendas to be put first, practical participation by farmers, and the implications for institutions and action. Contributors: Robert Rhoades, D.M. Maurya, Dianne Rocheleau et al. (local knowledge for agroforestry in Africa), Anil K. Gupta, Paul Richards, Roland Bunch, Louk Box, S.B. Mathema and D.L. Galt, Corazon B. Lamug, Gordon R. Conway, C. Lightfoot et al., J. Sumberg and C. Okali, Jacqueline A. Ashby et al., Zainul Abedin and Fazlul Haque, D. Norman et al. (Botswana), Maria E. Fernandez and Hugo Salvatierra, Carol J. Pierce Colfer et al., K.V. Raman, N.K. Sanghi, and Robert Chambers. Workshop discussions are summarized in separate sections.
