Abstract:Framed as a critique of anthropology and the conceptual apparatus of Western social science, this book extends critique to a classless social form - labelled the Southeast Nuba - of Kordofan Province, Sudan. Attention is given to the indigenous means by which local practices and knowledges are constituted, and an explicit political objection is mounted of the power dimensions of such constitutions. This study focuses particularly on gender roles, productive relations, and structures of authority, with specific regard to local discourses on causality. The study is based on research among the Nuba for fifteen months in the period 1966-1969 and short visits in 1977 and 1980.
