Abstract: | This discussion of the judicature under the 1989 new Constitution in Nigeria first briefly examines the structure of the judiciary and the administration of justice under the 1979 Constitution. Following an examination of the judicial power, jurisdiction and innovations made under the 1989 Constitution, the hierarchy of courts and jurisdictions is dealt with. Attention is paid to the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, the Federal High Courts, the Customary Law Courts (namely the Sharia Court of Appeal and the Customary Court of Appeal), and the composition of the various courts. This is followed by a discussion of the processes of the appointment and removal of judges. Notes, ref. |
