| Abstract: | This is a survey of curriculum implementation activities in secondary schools in Zimbabwe, carried out in 1989. 408 teachers from 58 secondary schools completed questionnaires. Evidence from the study shows that curriculum implementation in Zimbabwe secondary school classrooms is textbook driven; is effected through rote and reception instructional approaches; is adversely affected by shortage of textbooks and by teacher deficiencies in instructional planning and implementation skills, by inadequate support resources such as instructional materials and money, and by poor working conditions such as low remuneration, heavy workloads and limited promotion prospects. However, time allocated to each school curriculum subject was found to be adequate. Professional support to teachers through seminars and workshops was found to be inadequate even though teachers find such seminars and workshops fairly useful in improving their classroom skills. It was also found that Parents-Teachers Associations (PTAs) have not succeeded to reduce critical shortages experienced by secondary schools in the implementation of the curriculum. A number of measures to be taken for improvement of the situation conclude the article. Bibliogr., sum. |
