Abstract:This paper examines everyday interactions among the Turkana of northwestern Kenya. These interactions are characterized by a deep involvement of the actors. The following patterns of behaviour were observed: childish selfishness and competent negotiating when begging for something; unconcern about lying; wilful behaviour aimed at having one's way without apology; attachment to keeping up appearances; stagy performance with intense absorption in one's emotions. The author concludes that the Turkana way of interacting is similar to people's behaviour in competitive sports, where players are required to be deeply involved in the game. Bibliogr., sum.
