Abstract: | The structural adjustment programme (SAP) was prescribed as a cure for the economic crisis which Nigeria has been undergoing since the early 1980s. With respect to the rural areas its main objectives were to diversify the rural economy, remove distortions and contradictions in agricultural policies, lessen government intervention in order to favour the operation of market forces, and allow the naira to find its market value, thereby reducing its overvaluation. To achieve the objectives of rural employment, the federal government adopted certain SAP-based strategies, including the inauguration in 1986 of the Directorate of Food, Road, and Rural Infrastructure (DFRRI) and the National Directorate of Employment (NDE). The author concludes with recommendations intended to improve the achievements of the two Directorates in the future. Bibliogr. |
