Abstract: | A large number of injuries occur in home accidents, many of which require hospital attention. Personal, environmental and attitudinal factors contribute to the incidence of home accidents and their severity. This paper examines the patterns of home accidents with regard to the causes of severity of injury and the distribution of victims by age, sex and length of hospital stay. It covers all 100 home accident victims attended to at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, between January 1981 and February 1988. It was found that the major home accidents are falls, toxic affects of chemicals and petroleum products, fights and poisoning. The paper argues that many home accidents are preventable and offers suggestions on how to reduce the degree of occurrence of such accidents and minimize their effects. Bibliogr., sum. |
