Abstract:This article focuses on the various efforts to address the growing need for qualified teachers in Zimbabwe (e.g. the implementation of the Zimbabwe Integrated National Teacher Education Course (ZINTEC), the 'year-in-year-out' model, as well as in-service training). The quality of students recruited into teacher education is determined by stringent entry requirements. Attention is also given to the number and quality of teacher educators. Teacher education is very expensive and is heavily subsidized by the government. Much has been achieved in spite of a number of problems. There is, however, a need for solid research in education planning. Bibliogr., sum. also in Afrikaans and German.
