Abstract:	Given the critical shortage of qualified teachers at the secondary school level in Zimbabwe and the small number of new entrants into the teaching profession by geography graduates, this paper examines the career aspirations of undergraduate students in the Department of Geography at the University of Zimbabwe and their perceptions of teaching as a career. Data for the study were derived from a questionnaire survey of first and third (final) year geography students conducted during October 1990. Some 40 percent of the students studying geography in the Department of Geography do not consider teaching as a livelong career. Working conditions, particularly salaries, were given as the major factors why the teaching profession is unable to attract and retain geography graduates. Bibliogr.
