| Abstract: | Although in the works of many prominent African writers Islam provides the key component, it has often been ignored by critics of African literature. The essays in this volume restore to its proper place the role of Islamic tradition in the study of African literature, focusing on East and West Africa. The authors examine Islam in the works of Tayeb Salih, Camara Laye, Cheikh Hamidou Kane, Sembčne Ousmane, Birago Diop, and Hampâté Bâ. In addition there are special studies on Islam in Songhay epics, Swahili and Somali literature, Fulani initiatic narratives, Senegalese film, on the role of Sufism and Mouridism, with broader comparative analyses including E.W. Said's orientalist aproach, and the role of women. Two historical essays on East African and West African Islam provide the volume with essential contextual information as well as the disciplinary approaches needed to complement purely literary criticism. |
