Abstract:This volume examines the causes of famine in Africa and frames policy recommendations to manage and prevent food crises. Its contributions reflect a new political economy of famine, one that is broadly 'anthropological' in approach and which appears to provide a promising avenue for addressing food crises. Crucial to this approach are considerations of power and gender. The book begins with a discussion of famine theories. The contributions in the second section explore the positive and negative impacts of different development activities on hunger. The third section analyses instances of famine and hunger in Niger, Ethiopia, the Sudan, Guinea-Bissau, Tanzania, Ghana, Cameroon, and Chad. A subsection pays special attention to the role of gender in questions of food security. The last two contributions constitute the fourth section of the book and contemplate prospects for the future. Contributions by: M. Watts, S.P. Reyna, W.I. Torry, C. White, J.W. Clay, J. O'Brien and E. Gruenbaum, U. Funk, G. Clark, D.O. Kerner and K. Cook, M. Goheen, E.P. Brown, and D.A. Cleveland.
