Abstract: | Methods for screening nutritional status, such as weight assessment, which require literacy and sophisticated equipment, are often impractical on a public health scale, especially if they are to be used by lower cadre workers. This paper demonstrates that the measurement of arm circumference may be useful in assessing the nutritional status of women of the reproductive age group. It is based on results from measurements of a sample of nonpregnant women aged 15-49 from southwest and northeast Nigeria. Weight, height and arm circumference were measured. It was found that age had a fair degree of correlation with weight, and the left arm circumference was found to be significantly correlated with age. There was a fairly strong relationship between weight and arm circumference. It is suggested that arm circumference measurements can be taken as a screening procedure by lower cadres of health workers, such as traditional birth attendants. Ref., sum. in English and French. |
